Synopsis

Based on Milan Kundera’s celebrated novel, this is the story of Tomas (Daniel Day-Lewis), a gifted surgeon who puts his skillful hands to use outside the operating room, bed-hopping between Sabina (Lena Olin), an uncompromising free spirit, and Tereza (Juliette Binoche), a devoted photographer, during the Prague Spring. Their lives are a sensuous roundelay until the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia brings their passions to a crushing end. Directed and co-written by Philip Kaufman (HENRY & JUNE) with Jean-Claude Carriere (BELLE DE JOUR, BIRTH), and photographed by Ingmar Bergman collaborator Sven Nykvist, this luminous study of sex, art, and politics is as thrilling today as ever. 4K restoration.
