Synopsis

She captivated a nation and came to embody the modern woman in pre-war China, but her life off screen was more colorful than anything on the silver screen. Maggie Cheung (IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE, IRMA VEP) is Ruan Lingyu, the “Greta Garbo of China,” whose life ended by her own hand at 24 after intense media scrutiny. Hong Kong New Wave auteur Stanley Kwan’s “most thrilling and dazzling achievement” ( Chicago Tribune ) is a daring blend of period drama, archival footage, and documentary, as beguiling as its subject. Co-starring Tony Leung Ka-fai (THE LOVER). In a new 4K restoration in honor of its 35th anniversary.
